ASC-226: Help! My Horse Roars! What is Laryngeal Hemiplegia?
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction The larynx of the horse is part of the upper airway and serves as a conduit between the pharynx and the trachea, or the wind pipe that takes inspired air to the lungs for gas exchange. The larynx is comprised of a number of cartilages that work together to allow for increased airflow during exercise and to close the trachea during swallowing to prevent foreign material and food particles entering the trachea and consequently the lungs. The larynx is also where the vocal cords are located, and is therefore where the voice originates and is an instrument for phonation. The cartilages that comprise the larynx are: cricoid, thyroid, epiglottis, and the arytenoids. During exercise, the arytenoid cartilages are held open (abduction) by the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscles, which are innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerves. Various ailments can affect the different parts of the larynx of horses. Diseases of the larynx can produce airway obstruction and sometimes dysphagia. Obstructive diseases, such as laryngeal hemiplegia, often produce an abnormal respiratory noise and, most important, they limit airflow, which leads to early fatigue and poor exercise performance. OBJECTIVES (1) To determine the effect of age, height, weight, breed, sex, and specific use on the prevalence of idiopathic left laryngeal hemiplegia (ILH) in a population of draft performance horses; (2) to determine the association between tracheal mucus and laryngeal dysfunction, and the prevalence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in a population of draft performance horses. ...
متن کاملCorrelation of the Havemeyer endoscopic laryngeal grading system with histopathological changes in equine Cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscles
The establishment of a single validated endoscopic laryngeal grading system for assessing recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) is desirable to facilitate direct comparisons between the findings of different clinical and research groups worldwide. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the Havemeyer endoscopic laryngeal grading system and histopathological changes con...
متن کاملVoice therapy for laryngeal hemiplegia: the role of timing of initiation of therapy.
OBJECTIVE Laryngeal hemiplegia, also known as vocal fold paralysis, causes severe communicative disability. Although voice therapy is commonly considered to be beneficial for improving the voice quality in several voice disorders, there are only a few papers that present scientific evidence of the effectiveness of voice therapy in treating the disabilities of laryngeal hemiplegia. The aim of th...
متن کاملEvaluation of partial arytenoidectomy as a treatment for equine laryngeal hemiplegia.
The efficacy of partial arytenoidectomy was assessed in 6 Standardbred horses, with surgically induced laryngeal hemiplegia, at rest (Period A) and during exercise at speeds corresponding to maximum heart rate (Period C) and 75% of maximum heart rate (Period B). Peak expiratory and inspiratory airflow rate (PEF and PIF), and expiratory and inspiratory transupper airway pressure (PUE and PUI) we...
متن کاملA retrospective study of radiographic abnormalities in the repositories for Thoroughbreds at yearling sales in Japan
This study aimed to evaluate whether radiographic abnormalities at yearling sales were associated with the failure to start racing at 2-3 years of age. Radiographic abnormalities in the carpal (n=852), tarsal (n=976), metacarpophalangeal (n=1,055), and metatarsophalangeal joints (n=1,031) from 1,082 horses, recorded at yearling sale, were reviewed. Eighty-two horses (7.6%) failed to start racin...
